On Monday afternoon, Montgomery County Fire and EMS personnel were called to the 15400 block of Peach Leaf Drive off Quince Quince Road where there was a reported fire in the second floor of a single-family, split-level home.

According to officials, there was one person in the home when the fire broke out, and they were able to escape, though non-life-threatening injuries were reported after attempting to extinguish the fire before first responders arrived.

A cat was also able to escape unharmed.

Investigators said on Tuesday that the cause was determined to have been a candle that ignited nearby combustibles in a bedroom, setting off a smoke alarm.

The homeowner then attempted to knock down the flames on his own, but suffered burn injuries before getting out of the house.

The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
